Quick Tips for Taking Care of Used Gearboxes

Used gearboxes or used car parts are every bit as delicate as brand new ones. Although remanufactured gearboxes have been reconditioned to meet original manufacturer’s specifications, remember that they have already seen better days. That’s why they also need to be properly maintained and serviced regularly to avoid premature failure.

The following are some tips for taking care of used gearboxes.

Make a point of checking the gearbox fluid every 1,500 kilometres or so. Fluids that are low in level and has dark colour and burnt smell are signs that your transmission needs professional help. If left unattended, it could lead to malfunction.

You should be very familiar with your car’s driving characteristics and notice changes such as noise and other strange behaviours in your car’s transmission. At the first sign of changes in the way your transmission handles, have it checked by the professionals.

Have your engine properly tuned regularly. That’s because engines and transmissions work hand-in-hand. A properly tuned engine ensures long-life to transmissions.

Regularly check the car’s cooling system. One of the major causes for premature transmission failure is excessive heat. If your cooling system isn’t properly working, don’t wait any longer. Have it repaired right away.

Check your car’s manual or manufacturer’s guide for recommendations on the car’s scheduled maintenance. When having the oil changed, make sure to have the transmission fluid checked.

Avoid overloading your car. Keep in mind that overloading also causes overheating and could take a toll on your car’s transmission life.

Keep in mind that prevention is better than cure. That’s why having your gearbox diagnosed and repaired early are some of the best things you should do before problems get worse. Maintaining your gearbox’s health leads to minimal operating costs and ensures its longevity.

If you’ve spotted small problems in your car’s gearbox, avoid driving it as it causes further damage. Also, avoid drag racing as it unnecessarily strains your car’s gearbox.

Avoid driving on spare tires or mismatched tire sizes with front wheel or all wheel drive vehicles for long periods.
